CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson held a news conference at City Hall Monday morning to discuss the future of United Airlines at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Mayor Jackson expressed his disappointment saying the loss of the hub is significant, but it's not end of Hopkins.

According to a spokesperson for the flight attendants, the number of United flights will be drastically decreased from 170 a day to 70.

According to United, the hub in Cleveland has not been profitable for over a decade and has lost tens of millions of dollars in recent years.

"A billion dollars has been spent over the last 15 years to improve the airport, so we believe we are in good shape," said Airport Director Ricky Smith.

Sunday, February 2, United Airlines posted a letter regarding the cuts on the company's website.

Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald issued the following statement Sunday as well:

"United's decision will affect many hard-working families in Cuyahoga County. We are very concerned for these impacted employees and committed to assisting them in any way we are able. We have already been in contact with our workforce development team, who will be available to counsel impacted employees on next steps. While this is disappointing news, our region is resilient and confident. We will continue to focus on the future and work with the private sector and other government entities to increase air service to our area."
