The Salvation Army needs donations

(WOIO) -

The coat racks at area Salvation Army stores are almost bare.  Donations are down even though the need is growing.

"Our other donations are also down but our clothing is really down," says Major Gayle Miga.

The Salvation Army gives coats to the men in its 64 bed rehabilitation facility.  It sells the others and all of the donations it gets to raise money to run all its programs and it needs every penny.

"We receive no government money, no United Way money," says Miga.

The Salvation Army which isn't connected to any church, is a church of its own.  Its survival is based on the kindness of others who make helping people like Cliff Uhl possible.  Uhl proudly admits to being a recovered alcoholic.  He credits the Salvation Army's rehab program for helping him become a contributing member of society.

"I wouldn't be sober, wouldn't be nearly as strong on my feet as I am today," says Uhl.

To continue the good work of helping people like Uhl, donations are needed.

Anyone can go online to salvationarmy.org to arrange for a pickup.  All area stores also have donation centers.
