Recycling bins installed in downtown Cleveland

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The City of Cleveland will finalize installation today of 40 recycling bins throughout the downtown Cleveland area, as part of the City's ongoing effort to increase recycling rates and materials diverted from landfills.

The recycle bins have been placed next to existing waste receptacles and are located between West 9th Street and East 12th Street from Lakeside Avenue to Prospect Avenue, with some locations extending along Euclid Avenue to Playhouse Square and Cleveland State University.

Each recycle bin has a blue lid to distinguish it from waste receptacles and is equipped with a messaging panel indicating what materials are accepted. Acceptable materials include:

· Plastic Containers (numbered #1 through #7)

· Glass Containers (all colors)

· Aluminum Cans

· Paper

· Cardboard

· Magazines

"The presence of recycling bins downtown is a visible way for residents, employees and tourists to understand that Cleveland is committed to sustainability and to do their part by recycling," said Jenita McGowan, Chief of Sustainability. "These bins not only provide opportunities for the public to recycle in high traffic areas downtown, but also increase the City's recycling rates. With 2014 being the Year of Zero Waste, we look forward to collecting metric information from these bins to inform future expansion of recycling in public spaces."

As part of Mayor Frank G. Jackson's Sustainable Cleveland initiative, 2014 has been designated as the Year of Zero Waste. Installation of these recycle bins marks a step forward in Cleveland's work to reduce waste and associated greenhouse gas emissions from our community.

Funding for the recycle bins comes from the City of Cleveland's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program, a program of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
