Masterson signs one-year deal

Posted: Updated:

Goodyear, AZ (WOIO) - The Indians are batting 1.000 in arbitration this Winter, and even Justin Masterson doesn't want to challenge that average, so the Indians' ace has agreed to a one-year deal worth $9.7625 million.

Earlier this offseason, Masterson had filed an arbitration figure of $11.8 million, while the Indians countered with $8.05 million.

Now the question is whether the Tribe will be able to sign Masterson to a long-term deal. He's eligible for free agency after the season, and many are comparing the situation to Homer Bailey's negotiations with the Reds. Bailey, who's comparable to Masterson in terms of service time and performance, is closing in on a six year, $100 million deal with Cincinnati.

Masterson, 28, went 14-10 for the Indians last season, with a 3.45 ERA in 193 innings. He led MLB with three complete game shutouts and finished the year in the bullpen because of an oblique injury. Masterson has thrown 180+ innings in each of the last four seasons and for his career owns an ERA+ of 100 across parts of six major-league seasons.
