Indians react to Ubaldo bolting for Baltimore, Masterson gets his wish

GOODYEAR, AZ- -

It is now a certainty that Ubaldo Jimenez will not be back with the Indians after agreeing to a four year, 50 million dollar contract with Baltimore. "It ends up being a business, we were really happy with him here, but it's a better opportunity for him over there," said Tribe catcher Yan Gomes. Manager Terry Francona expressed happiness for his former player. "I think we all are, the only time we won't pull for him is when we're playing against him."

On Monday, Justin Masterson did not sound like a guy that wanted to jump a plane for St. Petersburg, FL for an arbitration hearing. "I'm more than excited to be here and a part of this team, which is why we don't have to go to Florida. We can all stay right here and continue to get our work in and work hard."

The right-hander got his wish on Tuesday, agreeing to a one year deal worth close to $10 million. Now that there is agreement for this season, the two sides can talk about a multi-year deal. Masterson is due to be a free agent after the season.

The right hander is drawing comparisons to Cincinnati pitcher Homer Bailey, the Reds and Bailey are talking about a six year, 100 million dollar contract. Masterson could ask for something similar. "If he signs a multi-year deal, there were some comparables in there. If his is good, maybe that will give us something to work off of for some sort of multiyear deal that we've talked about after we get through this initial part."
