City council considers demolition of former Clarion Hotel

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo City Council got its first official look at a proposal aimed at removing a major eyesore in south Toledo: the former Clarion Hotel on Reynolds Road.

Mayor D. Michael Collins says the proposal calls for the Lucas County Land Bank to acquire the site, which is on the forfeited property list, and then transfer the property to the city. The mayor says tearing down the former hotel is needed to help redevelop the former K-Mart location, which is being targeted by a retail furniture operation.

While the mayor says the city would seek state and federal funding for the demolition, Councilman Tom Waniewski says his main concern is making sure the city doesn't end up on the hook for a costly demolition project.

"If one domino tipped over, cleaning up a building will start some economic development in the city, then I'm generally for it," the councilman said. "I want to look to see what the liabilities are for us taxpayers. If we can pull in some money from federal, state grants, then that's a better way to work this deal."

The measure requires approval by city council. A vote could happen as early as next week.
