Springfield Schools setting up student-run radio station

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Springfield Local Schools are in the process of creating their own student-run radio station.

The FCC has approved the district to have the radio frequency 97.7 FM. That's the first of many steps for the district to start a 24-hour radio station.

The station would be an elective class for high school students. They are still waiting on funding, which will determine the start-up date, but Superintendent Kathryn Hott says they could see progress by the 2015-16 school year.

"We just see the endless opportunities for students to learn that area of broadcast and broadcast journalism," she said. "We also see it as an opportunity to share with our community, and be able to continue to communicate."

Hott says they are now in the process of getting approval on call letters for the station.
