Clowney wows 'em at Combine

Posted: Updated:

Indianapolis, IN (WOIO) - Over the past year people have questioned his attitude and work ethic, but on Monday morning, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney put to rest any doubts about his physical attributes. Clowney showed up at the 2014 NFL Combine with a chip on his shoulder, and wowed the scouts at Lucas Oil Stadium by turning in an unofficial time of 4.47 seconds in his first attempt at the 40 yard dash.

Three hours later, when the official results were released, the NFL recognized Clowney as the fastest defensive lineman ever at the event with an official 40 yard dash time of 4.53 seconds. His 10 yard split time was 1.56 seconds, faster than the 1.59 second 10 yard split time of top rated quarterback prospect Johnny Manziel. In a simulcast of the two 40 yard dashes shown on the NFL Network, Clowney was at least two yards faster than Manziel to the finish line.

Clowney dropped eight pounds from his official listed weight at South Carolina (274 lbs.). He also had a 37 1/2-inch vertical leap and 10-foot 4-inch broad jump.

Questions about his drive and determination to play in the NFL still remain at the forefront after Clowney passed on participating in the on-field position drills. Clowney later told NFL Network's Willie McGinest that he was dealing with a tight hip flexor injury. Despite the questions about his work ethic, Clowney remains a projected top 10 draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft in May.
