Lawsuit filed in federal court over Indiana same-sex marriage ban

Posted: Updated:
LOUISVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

Four couples from southern Indiana have filed a lawsuit in federal court that seeks to overturn an Indiana law that declares same-sex marriages void, even if another state recognizes the union.

In response to the lawsuit, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said, "I will represent our state and defend our statute now and on any appeal to the best of my skill and ability, as I swore an oath to do."

Earlier this week, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear said he would hire outside lawyers to appeal a decision granting recognition to gay couples married in other states after Attorney General Jack Conway said he would not pursue the case.
