MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Intense flames and heavy smoke are what Tony Grandberry woke up to at 3 a.m. Wednesday morning. Within minutes, his entire house on Barrett Street was on fire.

When fire crews arrived on the scene, flames were shooting through the roof.

"They were so high it caught the tree on fire," said Kiara Rice, who lives across the street.

Investigators believe careless smoking caused the fire.

Tony Grandberry says a friend of his was also in the house when the fire started. They both got out safely, but were a little shaken up.

"Yeah, it scared me to death," he said. "I saw the fire, yeah, from the front room. I was in the back room."

The fire did extensive damage. Grandberry is working with the Red Cross to find a temporary place to stay while he figures out what to do next.
