The Villa Angela-St. Joseph's Vikings came up two points short of the goal to win another state championship. They were beaten by Lima Central Catholic 64-62 in the Division III title game on Saturday in Columbus.
Carlton Bragg hit a three pointer with 4.1 seconds left to pull the Vikings to within one point, 63-62. A quick foul sent Jake Williams to the line for Lima Central where the unlikely happened. Williams missed both free throws, but got his own rebound on the second miss. Four Vikings defenders were in place, Williams was the only Thunderbird there, but corralled the miss when nobody boxed him out. The Vikings had to foul again, but by then there was less than two seconds left.
Brian Parker missed a game-winning half-court shot at the buzzer. VASJ was looking to become the first school to win a state championship in all four divisions.
