MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -

An off-duty police chief saves the day and helps catch a criminal on the run.

Mentor Police Detective Brian Butler and Lake County Sheriff Deputy Marshal Boldin were tracking a felon who had been eluding officers to avoid serving a 14-month prison term.

As fate would have it, Mentor Captain Carl Dondofer was at home when it was brought to his attention that officers were in his neighborhood chasing a criminal.

Capt. Dondofer looked out of his rear window and saw the criminal running through his neighbor's backyard.

Instinctually the captain run out of his back door in pursuit of the criminal.

Capt. Dondofer caught the criminal by tackling him to the ground and restraining him until the officers arrived.
