Spring planting season has sprung

Posted: Updated:

Nothing says spring like the boys of summer, back after a winter of discontent. The orange barrels are out and you're now starting to see people out looking for flowers to plant in their backyard.

"We just got some new soil.  We are going to get some grass in our backyard, so we are looking for some flowers here to plant," Rachel Blum-Josey of Lakewood.

Paul Bilyk owns and runs Lakewood Garden Center along with his wife.  His customers are starting to trickle back in - hungry for warmer weather and ready to get their green thumbs in the ground.

"Just a lot of looky lou's - you know - coming out to see what's new and more than anything looking to get out of the house," says Bilyk.

It's time to clean up and to fertilize.

"We are starting to push fertilizers out the door pretty good.  The pansies and the spring flowers you can plant right now are starting to go," adds Bilyk.

This year the term "late bloomer," means that much more this year.  Tulips and daffodils are just starting to poke out of the ground.

The planting season is about three to four weeks behind, but the buds are about to burst with color.

Keep in mind there could be some reminders of our frigid winter in your landscape.

"You are probably going to see some die off with the record cold temperatures we've had - anything that was close to being hardy in our zone may not be back," says Bilyk.
