Changes could delay construction of apartment complex near UT

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The developer is looking to change the plan for a proposed apartment complex near the University of Toledo.

Polaris Real Estate has made deals to purchase properties near at the intersection of Bancroft Street and Douglas Road. Tenants of the buildings have moved out, but money has not been exchanged.

Toledo City Councilman Tom Waniewski says the old Rick's City Diner and The Library building may stay, even after the new apartments are built. If the developer and property owner can't come to terms, Polaris could build around it.

"Everybody, for the most part, wants to see development. I mean, what are you going to do with that Maxwell's now? Everything's out of it. It's boarded up. It's now becoming the blight. You know, my personal opinion is work with the developers long and hard on this. So, get rid of the blight now. Something's got to be done," said Waniewski.

Sources say there is also talk of making the complex two or three stories, rather than the original three.

Waniewski says if the plans stay close to the original, the developer can move forward.  If the changes are too drastic city council will have to take a look and approve the new plans, which could take months and delay the project another year.
