One person, eight cats and six birds killed in Middleburg Heights house fire

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, OH (WOIO) -

One person, more than a half-dozen cats, and six birds were killed in an early morning Middleburg Heights house fire on Thursday.

A neighbor called for help after the fire sparked around 4:30 a.m. in the 13700 block of Trenton Trail.

A family of four was inside the home when the fire started, three people managed to safely escape. Two were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner has identified the victim as Michael Donofrio, 37.

Three cats were rescued by firefighters -- all were taken to a local veterinarian. Eight cats didn't make it. They were pulled out by animal control and four other cats are still missing.

Six exotic birds died in the fire as well.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
