Toledo boy attacked on playground, has cell phone stolen

Posted: Updated:

Toledo Police say a 12-year-old boy was robbed in broad daylight Monday afternoon, and they're hoping you can help them figure out who's responsible.

The robbery happened at the playground near Elmhurst Elementary.  The boy was reportedly pushed off his scooter and had his iPhone stolen.

The boy's mother says the thing that scares her the most is how close to home the robbery happened.  She says they live on the street of the playground and can actually see where it happened from their front yard.

"He comes to the front door crying, I could tell something was wrong right away," said Alison Bartley, the boy's mother.  "He says ‘I was jumped down at the park, someone has my cell phone.'"

It was the first day of Spring Break for 12-year-old Tommy Bartley when he was robbed.  Outside of taking his phone, the robber also left him with bruised ribs and bloodied knees and elbows.

"It's not a thing of just boys growing up.  This shouldn't happen," said Mrs. Bartley.  "I still want him to be a little boy and go out and play but we will definitely be more cautious now."

Toledo Police describe the suspect as a white man with red hair and tattoos on his arms.  The family believes he may be a high school student.
