CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

It is the heart of our city -- Public Square, and it's in for some major redevelopment.

The project would drastically change the face of the city.

In fact, to change Public Square would be a tremendous benefit to the city. But how would it affect RTA, the train and bus routes at the city's transportation hub?

"We support the city of Cleveland and this initiative and all that they're doing to really try and enhance our city and we just want to make sure we do the best we can for our transit customers," said Mary Shaffer of RTA.

The plan would close Ontario and at time Superior. As a result, there would have to be a major overhaul of how people connect to buses and trains.

"We have major connectivity in Public Square and Tower City. We have 70,000 people who use Public Square and Tower City every single day and half of those people transfer between the two," Mary Shaffer added.

A true safe public space at Public Square would be a critical piece to the downtown momentum. RTA is on board, they say, with hopes that a square makeover could make them better.

"We really have encouraged them and worked with them to enhance public transportation if at all possible with this plan," said Mary Shaffer.
