AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

The Akron Police Department is now warning residents to watch out for scam artists posing as water department employees.

Officers are investigating a theft that occurred on Hampton Road, where the victim allowed one of the fake utility workers into the home.

The fake worker said there were possible problems with the homeowners underground water pipes. Once invited in, the fake worker walked with the victim around the home, checking the faucets and appliances.

As the victim was occupied, another suspect entered the home and stole cash and other valuables.

Police say that the Akron Water Department is not responsible for fixing problems or testing inside your home, and would rarely ask for entry.

If they do, the legitimate utility workers will have proper identification, show it, and will provide a supervisor's phone number so you can call to verify.

Akron residents are advised that if anyone claiming to be a water service employee comes to your home with no identification or appointment, you should turn them away, shut and lock your door, and call Akron Police immediately at (330) 375-2181.
