University of Akron police filed a menacing charge against a coach.

This, after a confrontation with one of his players.

The Zips plays its home games at Canal Park in downtown Akron.

We've learned that something that happened in the team's dugout during last Wednesday's game has the coach, Rich Rembielak, on paid administrative leave.

Rembielak is a former minor leaguer with an overall winning coaching record at Kent State, Wake Forest and Akron. On Thursday the Zips played and lost to Wright State.

In the police report a player says the coach roughed him up.  Specifically the player claims he was standing on the bench when: 'his coach grabbed the back of his jacket collar and pulled him back.'

That's possibly excusable, but what happened next according to the player may not be.

'The suspect shoved him and challenged him to a fight.'

A former player tells 19 Action News Rembielak is  demanding and hard-nosed. Also that he is well respected.  He was brought to Akron to beef up the baseball program.

Now the University is conducting an investigation saying: "The allegation is a serious one - as the welfare of our student-athletes is our top priority."

As we approached Rembielak's home a woman saw us in the driveway and closed the door.

When we got to the door no one answered.

The University says it has met with the player, his parents, the team and coaches immediately after learning of the incident the next day. Rembielak excused himself from the weekend games and now has been put on paid administrative leave.

The University declined to make and on camera statement, citing the fact that this is an on-going investigation.
