CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Just over one week ago, a driver headed in the wrong direction on I-77S drove his vehicle into oncoming traffic, smashing into a car, killing another and critically injuring himself.

That driver, 31-year-old Jerome Cook of Cleveland, is now dead.

Cook was placed under arrest and rushed to the MetroHealth Medical Center ICU after the deadly highway crash on April 30.

The driver of the other vehicle, which was hit head on, was 48-year-old Jack Dixon.  Dixon, who was on his way to work, died at the scene of the accident.

Original Story from April 30,2014:

On Wednesday, April 30, around 4:12 a.m., Cleveland Police were dispatched to I-77 southbound for a traffic accident near Fleet Ave.

Officers confirm that Jerome Cook, 31, entered I-77 southbound traveling northbound near Fleet Ave.

Cook's 2005 Kia collided head on with Dixon's car. Dixon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 48-year old Eastlake man is a husband and father of three.

The deadly collision also caused a second crash with a third vehicle. That driver was treated for minor injuries. A Cleveland Police vehicle was also struck while on scene; no officers were injured as a result.

Cook was placed under arrest and transported by EMS to MetroHealth Medical center for critical injuries. His is in critical condition at this time.

Upon release from the hospital, he will be transported to the Central Prison Unit and booked for aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.

Detectives believe alcohol may have played a role. OVI charges may be issued pending test results.

19 Action News also learned that Cook has not had a valid driver's license since 2000. Records show his license was suspended for not paying child support.
