TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Police and fire crews, along with the bomb squad, were called to investigate after a suspicious package was found at a west Toledo elementary school. It turns out the item was a dog toy.

Police were notified by a school resource officer that an object was found near a dumpster in a parking lot outside McGregor Elementary School around 8 a.m. Wednesday. Rambo Lane was closed to give crews space.

Sgt. Joe Heffernan with the Toledo Police Department says no evacuations were issued. Steve Perry, principal of McGregor Elementary, says children were safe and remained in the gym the entire time.

Perry says the school sent a text alert to parents just after 9:30 a.m., once they had enough information to share.

"Right away, as soon as we had some information about it. You don't want to send out information until you yourself have investigated to see what it was, or what it could be. So that call went out. At that point, that is when some parents started coming in again to get their children," said Perry.

Once word spread about a suspicious package, parents began picking up their kids at the school.

"It's terrifying, you know? To think that something could happen. You know, I would never want to lose my little girl," said Christopher Vaseau.

"If it was a bomb, I don't think they should've let the kids in the school anyways. But they didn't know exactly what it is. There are cops back there and yes, this is the second time this year something like this has happened," said Melisa Terry.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m., the superintendent of Washington Local Schools, Patrick Hickey, tweeted that this was the second time this year this has happened at this location.

Earlier this school year, another package was found at the school, which raised concerns from school officials. Police will be investigating further.

"We will be looking to see who maybe had access to the parking lot that time. I know that there is some video at the school, so we will be reviewing some of that. It very well could have just been accidentally left here," said Heffernan.

Around 11:20, Hickey tweeted that it was a dog toy and they will always err on the side of caution with kids and staff.
