CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The RNC site selection committee was in Cleveland Wednesday.

They checked out the "Q", Progressive Field and looked inside every storage closets because they say they use every inch of every space.

"This is truly a wonderful city and we've enjoyed our visit very much," said Enid Mickelsen, Chair of RNC Site Selection Committee.

The visit was to see if Cleveland can stand up to the technical test.

"How many gigs of electricity you can plug into your workspaces, to how far out your hotels are to what kind of transportation you can provide. Looking at the structure of your streets,"
Mickelsen added.

Cleveland is among five other cities in the running that include Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City and Las Vegas.

The last RNC was held in Tampa, Florida where the city won over staff visiting the area years before making their final choice.

"To see the kind of growth and preservation of your history which I think gives you a really unique flavor for your city," said Mickelsen.

That flavor she's talking about includes the growth downtown.

According to the Downtown Cleveland Alliance the residential population is nearly 13,000 people, with more than 500 new apartment units going up before the end of the year along with new hotels.

Joe Roman with the Greater Cleveland Partnership is optimistic about Cleveland's RNC chances.

"I think the winds are blowing in our favor. I felt they were very enthusiastic about what they saw and like we said no stumpers at this point," said Joe Roman.

"We're leaving with a favorable impression," said Mickelson.

RNC officials will cut one more city before June 1, 2014. If Cleveland is still in the running a larger committee will visit.

The DNC is also looking at Cleveland to possibly host its convention.
