AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

He is a finalist for two college presidencies, The University of Akron and Youngstown State and he has said little about his move from sports to academics -- until now.

Jim Tressel has been off the sidelines at Ohio State for almost three years.  He's been on campus at the University of Akron as an executive VP for almost exactly two years.

Now he's a finalist for the Presidency there and at Youngstown State.

We sat down with him to see what's next.

Jim Tressel rejects the notion that he's not qualified for the Akron job. He says it, or any job is about leadership.

He told 19 Action News reporter Paul Orlousky that his life after coaching began when a search firm contacted him after leaving Ohio State. They wondered if he'd be interested in the presidency of smaller colleges. That is when Akron President Luis Proenza said come here.

"Other people only know what they've seen of you, whether its been the good things they've seen or the questionable things they've seen or whatever, they only know from afar," added Jim Tressel.

Tressel is convinced leadership is his key, and is offering a course in it later this month. Can you teach others to lead?

"How do I become that person that wants to serve others, to add value to others and there are certain things you have to work on to thing about," Jim Tressel said.

The University says it reviewed Tressel's status with the NCAA before making him a Vice President and is confident that if he is named President there will be no issues raised.
