Police have a warning for parents after a 54-year-old man is arrested and accused of molesting a 13 year-old-girl.
Richmond Detective Kevin Hiner says internet crimes against children is one of the largest growing crime trends. Hiner says child predators are constantly targeting young children.
"If that child has that phone in their room at night...charging or playing games on it," said Detective Hiner. "Predators have access to your child inside their bedroom."
Detective Hiner recommends parents take action immediately.
"They don't need computers, laptops, and tablets in their room at night," said Hiner. "Nobody does."
Investigators in Spotsylvania worked with area agencies to arrest Donald Owen, Jr. Police say Owen met a 13-year-old girl online -- claiming he was 17. Owen is 54, and he is now accused of molesting the girl in his car.
"That's why parents have to be involved with their children," said Hiner. "Know what they are doing. Who are they talking to? If they are on Facebook or any other of these social media websites the parent needs to be on there."
Hiner says the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force is constantly working new cases.
"We have had operations that have taken us from government housing, to trailers, to the far West End," said Hiner. "We are non-stop busy. We could work 24 hours 7 days a week with the people we have and we would never slow down."
Owen is now being held without bond. Several computers and cell phones were taken as evidence.
