Flooding concerns return to Lorain

Dozens of homeowners in Lorain are still cleaning up flooded basements from last month and are not looking forward to this week when it could rain every single day.

Every picture tells a story and these tell the tale of what happens on Ashland Avenue, like when it was flooded with four feet of water after heavy rains last month.

"We're going to be in trouble if it rains because the basement will flood again," said resident Jeffrey Gaines.

Gaines says he would not have moved here had he known the area was so prone to flood. And while he's still cleaning up and assessing the damage from last month's flood, he braces for next week when days of rain are in the forecast.

"The China cabinet is ruined, all my rugs are damaged," Gaines said.

Across the street from Gaines, Jim Zeto and his wife Marylynn are about half way through their clean up and restoration.

"Everything had to be carried up, as you can see it's coming back," Zeto said.

Part of the problem is this creek, Martin's Run is clogged with debris, natural and man made. The other part of the problem is the creek needs to be dredged regularly and thoroughly.

City officials discussed upgrading the Martin's Run drainage system which might mean increasing Lorain's storm water management fees but for the time being the talk remains just that, which is not much of a consolation for motorists whose cars seem to be floating in four feet of water when Ashland Avenue went under.

The cars tried to drive through it and the water was past the head light. So while home owners continue the clean up, city officials struggle with the idea of up grading their storm drain and dredge system.
