LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -

A fiery semi truck crash shut down Interstate 75 on Monday and a witness, who happened to be a volunteer firefighter, helped the driver escape the burning truck.

The semi burst into flames after driver Scott Howard, 50, veered off I-75 North and struck a barrier. It happened around 2:45 p.m. in Liberty Township near State Route 129. The burning semi was blocking lanes in both directions.

Richard Wetzel, 61, is a volunteer firefighter for Sugarcreek Township and happened to be passing the accident. Police say Wetzel helped Howard escape the burning truck before it became fully engulfed in flames.

Howard was transferred to the hospital with minor injuries. Three other vehicles were struck by the overturned trailer, but police said there were no serious injuries.

I-75 was shut down for several hours after the crash while crews worked to clear the remains of the semi truck.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says they are currently investigating the crash.
