Edgewater Marina recovers from Superstorm Sandy

It's been a 20 month journey for the Edgewater Marina. Ever since Superstorm Sandy destroyed the place -- a journey that began as a nightmare and is ending up a dream on the Lake Erie waterfront.

At one location alone, $9 million has been spent.

Pictures from the storm are frightening. Waves estimated at 22 ft. crashed into the marina. 30 of the 80 boats in the water sank and all 300 slips destroyed.

When 19 Action News was there a year ago, rebuilding was starting with demolition of the old docks.  Huge steel pieces were hauled away on a barge as scrap.
And now $9 million later the marina looks completely different. Work began in January, now inspectors for the state of Ohio and FEMA, who paid for the rebuild, are doing final inspections on the marina. A huge upgrade.

"Everything's state of the art, all the electrical, all the plumbing, all the water. Everything has been replaced from the old," said Dave Murrow.

Just nine weeks ago there was a foot of ice in the way, during one of the most brutal winters in a long time. But that didn't slow dock work at all.

"They were out everyday and everyday trying to get as much done as possible on land before they put them in," said Anne McCarthy.
The boaters are thrilled to be back and love the new docks.

Before long the state and FEMA will turn the marina over to the Metroparks to become the latest gem in the Emerald Necklace.
