CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Even before Tuesday's arrest, Derrice Alexander had been in trouble for his violent tendencies.

Alexander is the man police arrested in Cleveland on Tuesday, after he shot and killed his 2-year-old son.

Police had arrested him twice already in the past year for domestic violence toward his girlfriend, who is the mother of the boy who died in the shooting. Neither case went to court, even though the complaints say Alexander threatened his girlfriend's life, including when she was pregnant.

Cuyahoga County social workers had been watching the family for several weeks. A dispute between Alexander and his girlfriend resulted in a visit from case workers on May 20.

In a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said the shooter had a felony record and should not have had a weapon in the first place. He believes if someone would have spoken up and turned him in for having the gun, this tragedy could have been averted.

The shooting remains under investigation. Police are now tracking the weapon to see where it came from.
