CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Linda Johaneck has been helping victims of domestic violence for 18 years. Sadly, during that time she's seen the worst of the worst.

"In the past couple of years we have worked with families who have had a child killed by a domestic violence offender," said Johaneck.

Tuesday's shooting of a Cleveland toddler is no different. Police say the child's father shot at the boy's home when the bullet struck him. Johaneck told us children are often the silent victims.

"When there's a history of domestic violence and when the offender owns a weapon the risk factor, the level of danger is much higher," Johaneck said.

Johaneck also said many victims are too afraid to get help, and often blame themselves for the situation they're in. However there are places to turn to like the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center.

"Once the victim works with a domestic violence agency their risk of being further abused decreases greatly," Johaneck told us.

It helps break the cycle, so children don't grow up to be abusers, or victim's themselves.

In the case of the Cleveland two-year old he will never get a chance to grow up at all.

"It's such an injustice not to feel safe in your home," said Johaneck.
