CUYAHOGA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

Think mosquitoes have been bad so far this spring? You might be surprised to learn that health officials say this has been an average year so far. But they're already out battling the bugs.

"Right now we're doing a little of what's called larva sighting. We're treating standing water with pesticides in order to kill mosquitoes before they fly away. They're in the water. They're breeding. They're concentrated. So they're easier to get to," said Joe Lynch, Program Manager with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health

Many of us are heading outside to enjoy the warm weather and beautiful spring evenings. And some are preparing for the elements.

"Bug spray as much as possible," said Carrie Jancar.

That's just what experts say you should do. They say it's very important to use insect repellent before heading outdoors. And make sure to get rid of standing water around your house.

"Making sure your gutters are working properly. Flush out that bird bath once a week. Just get rid of standing water. Artificial containers. I've seen mosquitoes breed in a Frisbee that's upside down in the bushes," said Lynch.
