CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The father of a 2-year-old Cleveland boy pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder Thursday.

Derrice Alexander, Sr., of Cleveland, is accused of shooting and killing his son, Derrice Jr. early Tuesday morning.

The shooting took place while Derrice and his girlfriend, who is also his son's mother, were arguing.
Cleveland Police had arrested Alexander twice in the past year for domestic violence toward his girlfriend. Neither case went to court, even though the complaints say Alexander threatened his girlfriend's life, including when she was pregnant.

Cuyahoga County social workers had been watching the family for several weeks. A dispute between Alexander and his girlfriend resulted in a visit from case workers on May 20.

In a news conference Tuesday, Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said the shooter had a felony record and should not have had a weapon in the first place. He believes if someone would have spoken up and turned him in for having the gun, this tragedy could have been averted. Police are tracking the weapon to see where it originated.

Alexander's bond for the deadly shooting is set at $3 million.
