LAKE WHITNEY, TX -

A vacant luxury home in Texas is dangling over Lake Whitney after the bluff beneath it has given way and fallen into the lake.

The decision was made Friday morning to set fire to the home inwardly and excavate the debris.

A crack was found in the bluff beneath the home about a year ago.

According to a spokesperson at the Hill County Sheriff's Office, the homeowners knew the home was not safe and evacuated. There was once up to 60 yards of land between the house and the cliff's edge.

A large portion of the bluff fell into the lake on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a portion of the house dangling off the cliff.

According to authorities, the home is not a public safety concern, and the electricity to the home has been shut off.

Neighbors say the homeowners are from Florida and use the house part-time. If the house falls into the lake, the cleanup would be $200,000. The fire cleanup is expected to be $50,000. All costs would be the homeowner's responsibility.

Security for the private community is not allowing visitors or reporters on the scene.

Representatives with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are in the water behind the house, keeping boaters from getting too close.
