LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -

Republic Steel in Lorain is a massive physical plant, remodeled and reopened in the past year after a long shutdown. At about 8:00 a.m. something went wrong injuring three workers.

The incident brought plant emergency crews, three fire trucks, several ambulances and fire rescue to the scene.

Apparently a reported water leak -- a foreign object or a cooler piece of metal, got into the furnace causing a small explosion.

None of the injuries are believed to be life threatening.

A full investigation of what happened is underway by Republic investigators and likely at some point OSHA.

The following statement was issued by Republic Steel:

Earlier this morning, Republic Steel experienced an explosion in our melt shop when restarting the furnace after being shut down over the weekend.  The Lorain Fire Department was called and assisted with the situation. Three employees were transported to Mercy Hospital for treatment of burns and other injuries; two of those employees have been treated and released.  One employee was treated on-site and released for a minor injury.

Production in the melt shop has been shut down temporarily while we assess the damage and complete our investigation.   The health and safety of everyone in our facility is always a top priority.  We are acting swiftly to put corrective measures in place to prevent future incidents.
