The Cleveland Indians today announced that Single-A Lake County LHP LUIS LUGO has been named Indians Minor League Player of the Week for June 9-15. The Indians Player of the Week Award recognizes an individual performance from within the Indians Player Development System and is announced each Tuesday through the end of the Minor League season.
Lugo, 20, began his week with a career-high 10 strikeout performance on June 9 vs. Dayton, as he allowed just one run across 6.0 innings to earn the win in a 5-2 Captains victory over the Dragons. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound southpaw followed that up with his second win of the week on June 14 – this time at Dayton – again allowing just one run across 5.0 innings, while notching 7 strikeouts and no walks for the second straight start. Lugo has won 4 consecutive starts dating back to May 27, going 4-0 with a 1.66 ERA (4 ER/21.2 IP), with 25 strikeouts against just 5 walks over that span.
A native of Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela, Lugo originally signed with the Tribe as a non-drafted free agent on February 28, 2011. He entered the 2014 season with a career 3.39 ERA (54 ER/143.1 IP) across 3 short-season campaigns with the Indians. In his first year with a full-season squad, Lugo has already registered a career-high 69 strikeouts and is on pace to establish new career-highs in games, starts and innings pitched.
