CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Cleveland and its people can best be described as fighters. When the city takes a blow, it gets right up, dusts itself off and comes back with determination.

The most recent example of the city's resilience is taking flight at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. When United decided to drop 60 percent of its flights the city collectively voiced its displeasure.

We salute airport director Ricky Smith. He didn't whine. He rolled up his sleeves and got to work. New restaurants have been opened. New parking created. Older parking lots improved. Deservingly, the headlines have gone to Frontier Airlines. By October Frontier will offer 14 non stops to popular cities, including New York, Washington, Chicago, Atlanta, and Orlando.

Delta has also added flights. It's Ricky Smith's experience and steady leadership that has brokered these new flights and expect more announcements later this summer involving at least two more airlines.

The city was ready when United delivered its upper cut. A blow that was not fatal, but rather the punch needed for Cleveland to flex its muscle.

I'm Dominic Mancuso and that's how we see it.
