CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Unrest in the Middle East could mean higher gas prices here in Ohio.

Right now, the national average is $3.66 a gallon. Here in northeast Ohio it's higher at $3.84. Last year, you could fill up your tank of gas that cost $3.74 a gallon.

The Greater Cleveland Food Bank feels your pain.

"Folks are living paycheck to paycheck. They are struggling to make ends meet. So when food, or gas, or electricity goes up, it positions them at a more vulnerable position. They have hard decisions to make," said Kristin Warzocha with the food bank.

Most of us truck our food from the grocery store to home. The food bank has a much longer commute.

It keeps a close eye on gas prices because they are trucking food all over Cuyahoga County, as well as east to Ashtabula and south to Richland County.

Moving out 12 trucks each morning means the food bank uses a lot of gas to make sure more than 200,000 people are fed, as they help to serve more than 44 million meals this year.

Volunteers, like the wonderful folks from Progressive Insurance, are sorting food inside the warehouse. That's a big help, but you at home can also lend a hand with your bank account.

Make a donation of cash, which pays for a tank of gas. Remember, the food bank's trucks don't run on canned goods.

"We know that 39 percent of the people we serve struggle to make a choice between food and fuel. So it's a choice between food on the table or gas to get to work," said Warzocha.
