CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Jozy Altidore will not be playing on Sunday against Portugal in the World Cup after straining his left hamstring during the match with Ghana, the team confirmed.

On Thursday morning a few players confirmed the doubts that Altidore's injury would indeed keep him out of the upcoming game.

His injury was caused by Altidore chasing down a pass from Michael Bradley just 20 minutes in the United States opening match over Ghana with the win. He had left the game in pain and Aron Johannsson replaced him.

On Tuesday, Jurgen Klinsmann said he was "full of hope" that the US would get Altidore back.
He went so far as to say the US would get him "back in this tournament" but there were no specifics.

Center back, Matt Besler, who also left the game versus Ghana during halftime with tenderness in his hamstring, is now healthy and should be able to start in the game against Portugal.
