ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KOAT/CNN) - In New Mexico Thursday, an 89-year-old high school grad gratefully accepted his diploma.

Back in 1941, a then 17-year-old Dennis Baca had to leave school when he was drafted into the Army.

He served on the front lines in Japan in World War II until 1945.

Baca's children and grandchildren were there to see his long-overdue graduation.

"I'm very happy for my grandfather because it's something that he's always talked about his whole life," said his granddaughter, Desiree Sanchez.

Baca jokes the next step will be applying for jobs and prepping for job interviews.
