Road Rage: 79-year old punched at traffic light

On June 17, 2014 at 12:44 p.m. officers responded to the intersection of SOM Center Road and Cannon Road for an assault.  

Upon police arrival the reporting officer learned that a road rage incident had occurred on SOM Center Road northbound just north of US 422 where the lanes of travel narrow.  

When the two involved motorists stopped for the light at Cannon Road, one of the motorists, 71, exited his truck and approached the other motorist, 79, and began punching him in the left arm.  The 79 year old grabbed a hammer from the passenger floor of his vehicle and began using it to defend himself.  

The 71-year old had wounds on both of his hands which were bleeding.  

Solon Rescue was called. The 71-year old informed officers that he had a Concealed Carry Permit and that he was carrying a weapon. Officers took custody of his 9mm Beretta while the incident was being investigated.

The 71-year old who exited his vehicle and was charged with assault and released at the scene.
