MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) – On Friday, Memphis' VA Medical Center will be under close scrutiny, and Mid-South veterans are getting the chance to speak out about long wait times and emergency room problems.

Department of Veterans Affairs Acting Deputy Under Secretary Jan Murphy will be in Memphis to get a first-hand look at what goes on there. This visit comes two weeks after the facility was flagged for further review.

Hospital officials found out earlier in June that the facility is one of 81 VA medical centers across the country that will undergo further review. This is following an audit that showed at least three Memphis patients died after getting inadequate care in the ER.

Auditors want a closer look at scheduling problems that are part of a national controversy over the time it takes for veterans needing medical care to get an appointment.

In Memphis, 97 percent of the almost 50,000 patients had appointments scheduled within 30 days; however more than 2,000 patients had longer waits, some as long as 90 days.

The hospital's medical director says all of the issues will be addressed.

Murphy and other high-ranking VA officials, along with U.S. Representative Steve Cohen, will co-host a town hall meeting for Mid-South veterans.

The meeting starts at 10:30 Friday morning at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library on Poplar Avenue.
