Police in a small North Carolina town are investigating the death of Margaret "Maggie" Elizabeth Daniels.

The 31-year-old Cleveland native worked as a Newton-Conover high school teacher, guidance counselor and basketball coach.

She was found dead Saturday in her apartment and police have ruled her death a homicide.

A spokesperson for the Daniels' family released a statement Monday night:

"We are deeply saddened by the terrible news surrounding the death of our loved one, Maggie Daniels. Words cannot describe the grief that we are going through right now. We, as a family, have decided not to comment while there is an ongoing investigation."

Maggie, who moved to the area eight years ago, was once teacher of the year for the Newton Conover City Schools.

Officials have not said how she died.
