CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Hi, my name is Kalena Arif.  I'm an assignment editor for 19 Action News, but more importantly, I am a concerned parent.

Too often, it is my job to tell the story of chaos and deadly violence that is destroying a legion of black youth who are frustrated and lack refinement.

At our recent "Take Back Our Streets" town hall meeting, it was suggested that in order to resolve this perpetual problem, police officers need to become more visible and service providers, along with schools, need to be more involved. I say the resolution lies in the hands of parents who need to step up and get focused.

Much confusion surrounds who should be held responsible for the unruliness and who can be most effective in restoring order. Outside entities are in place to support a structured upbringing, but do not fill the void of neglect within so many homes.

Communities most affected by the ongoing violence will only see an improvement when each family becomes proactive and parents are held accountable. Let's increase the number of youth who are a reflection of responsible parenting and chip away at this issue one household at a time. Thank you.
