Ohio AG's office refers Zach Goldson death case to Special Prosecutions Section

BROWN COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

The Ohio Attorney General's Special Prosecutors Section is now looking into the death of Zach Goldson, who died last October while he was an inmate at the Brown County Jail.

Goldson, 24, was indicted on charges for Possession of Weapons While Under Disability, Unlawful Possession of a Dangerous Ordnance with specification and Discharge of a Firearm "upon or over a public road or highway" after an incident on Aug. 24, 2013.

Following an alleged altercation with Sheriff's Deputies, Goldson was found hanged in his cell in the early morning hours of October 5.

After an initial investigation, the Cause and Manner of Death was "Pending Investigation" and later changed to "Homicide," citing "Strangulation" as the cause.

The case was then referred to the Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) to conduct a probe into Goldson's death. A spokesperson for the Ohio Attorney General's office said on Friday that BCI has turned its findings over to the Special Prosecutions Section.

According to the AG's office, the prosecutor assigned to the case will now begin reviewing it to present to a Grand Jury, who will decide if there is probable cause to believe a crime was committed. The office notes that the prosecutor will likely request an additional investigation from BCI, which is common in complex cases.
