CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A 14-year-old boy accused of smothering his 10-month-old stepsister while she was sleeping appeared in court Wednesday.

A pre-trial hearing was held at 9 a.m. for the Reading teenager. Investigators said the boy has a psychiatric disorder.

He was charged with murder and felonious assault and taken to the Hamilton County Juvenile Detention Center. Court records state the incident happened June 25 at a home in Reading.

According to Reading Police Detective Joseph Mitsch Jr. in a sworn statement at the time of arrest, the teen "admitted to using a pillow to cover the victim's head and face while the victim was sleeping. (The teen) stated he did this because he heard voices telling him to do so."

At Wednesday's hearing, the boy's defense attorney asked for him to receive mental health treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

A judge ordered the teen be held at the juvenile detention center until he received complete psychological testing.

A new hearing date was scheduled for August 13.
