CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The city of Cleveland hosts the Gay Games beginning this Saturday, and the city has a few unsightly areas to fix in order to make a good impression.

Cleveland won the bid to host the Gay Games five years ago.

As the Games approach, most areas downtown look clean and safe, such as Public Square, the Warehouse District, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Great Lakes Science Center, and First Energy Stadium. All of these facilities are privately maintained.

City Hall has lights out, which makes the building look ghostly. 19 Action News reporter Paul Orlousky said he also noticed the spotlight out on the American flag. He e-mailed pictures to the city in May, but the lights are still out.

In Ohio City, two German tourists in the city noticed weeds and debris near the West Side Market.

"We liked it, but it's not our favorite city," said Pauli Hunecke.

Paula Jacobsen said the area is "a bit dirty, but the downtown - it's very nice, I think."

The RTA is responsible for some eyesores along the Rapid Transit System. Limbs that have been cut down have not been removed, and some areas along the line display poorly blotted out graffiti.

Other roadways all over the city are lined with debris, which is subject to ODOT and Cuyahoga County.

Theresa Bankhead works in Ohio City.

"Cleveland's got some things to show people, but they need to clean it up," she said.
