CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Thousands of athletes are in the Cleveland-Akron area this week for the 2014 Gay Games.

Saturday, August 9, the Opening Ceremony kicked off at Quicken Loans Arena with a host of entertainment, including singer, dancer, and radio host Lance Bass, Broadway actress Andrea McArdle, and the legendary Pointer Sisters.

Alex Newell, from Glee, joined McArdle for a tribute to Gay Games participants in a Broadway-style musical number.

Olympic champion and LGBT advocate Greg Louganis made a special appearance as well.

Participants will gather at 4 p.m. Saturday, August 16 at the Cleveland Convention Center for the Closing Ceremony.

Presented by the Cleveland Foundation the Gay Games is one of the most inclusive sports and cultural festivals in the world.

The Games are open to all adults - regardless of sexual orientation or athletic ability.  

Entrants from more than 50 countries will take part in a plethora of events including flag football, sailing, ballroom dancing, figure skating, synchronized swimming, track and field, swimming and cheerleading. Other programs includes a rodeo, choir concerts, conferences, comedy shows and tours.

The Gay Games first started in San Francisco in 1982 and takes place every four years.
