WILLOUGHBY HILLS, OH (WOIO) -

A local man is being called a hero after he stopped to help crash victims.

Jeremy Van Horn was stopped at the intersection of the I-90 exit ramp to Route 306 in Willoughby. He looked behind him and saw a car barreling up the ramp. When that car tried to stop at the light, it hydroplaned and crashed into a ditch.

"I sprinted over to the car that was on fire at this time. Flames, smoke couldn't see much really. There was a body and his friend the driver was bloody, he was a mess but doing everything he could to get his friend out of the car but he was unconscious," said Van Horn.

Eric Baird was the driver, Kevin Baird the passenger. Eric was unconscious as Kevin tried to pull him from the car.

That's when Van Horn and another man jumped in to help.

"Some gentlemen with an Applebee's shirt. Jumped out, didn't ask questions. Didn't think, just jumped right in," said Van Horn.

They helped pull the unconscious driver from the car, which was now on fire.

"Last second we pulled the guy out. Car came into flames within 20 seconds after that," said Van Horn.

As for the mystery Applebee's man, "I gave him a big hug he left and I don't know his name or anything. He didn't want any credit. Just took off like a guardian angel," Van Horn said.

Van Horn said he isn't a hero.

"What else do you do? People need help, you don't think. You react," he said.

Kevin and Eric were both taken to Hillcrest Hospital, but they wouldn't release their conditions or if they were released.

Police are investigating if alcohol was a factor.
