Indiana deputy clerk pleads guilty to wire fraud

LAWRENCEBURG, IN (FOX19) -

A Lawrenceburg deputy clerk treasurer pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud after she illegally obtained tens of thousands of dollars through cashing fraudulent checks.

According to court documents, Theresa Bruening issued herself second payroll checks and used the extra money for personal use.

As part of the scheme, Bruening would create a paycheck in the name of a fake employee and then change the payee to herself. She would then change the entry in the record books to indicate that the first check was voided.

She used wire transfer to receive the money.

Bruening began working for the City in January 2012. Between January 2012 and March 2013, she wrote approximately 40 additional checks, totaling more than $40,000.

She obtained money from 39 of the checks, making her proceeds $37,491.

Bruening pleaded guilty to wire fraud Thursday. As part of her plea, she agreed to pay $40,551 in restitution.
