Elderly woman nearly hit in shooting near home

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

An elderly Murfreesboro woman is thankful to be alive after someone sprayed bullets from a vehicle in front of her home. Several came close to hitting her.

Mary Howse, 83, of East State Street, had just taken a quick nap shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday.

She was sitting on her sofa in her den when her dog went wild.

"I said, 'I better see what he was barking at,'" Howse said. "He ran in the living room and I heard this noise."

It didn't take long for her to realize someone was shooting in her neighborhood, and her East State Street home had been hit.

"It just scared me to death," Howse said.

She was sitting directly on the other side of the back glass patio door. It was shattered by a bullet.

"I don't know what kept me from getting shot," she said while pointed at the shattered glass.

Bullets flew through three other windows, hit her kitchen cabinets and pierced right through a wall.

"It took me by surprise at first," Howse said.

Several folks who live in the neighborhood, who didn't want to be identified said they don't believe the 83-year-old or her house was the intended target.

This is not the first time innocent people escaped injury when their homes in the same neighborhood were sprayed with bullets.

Police have investigated more than a half-dozen homes over the past year.

There is a police precinct nearby, and officers have increased patrol. But that's little comfort to homeowners like Howse.

"It's terrible, it's awful," Howse said. "You're not bothering them, you are just there asleep."

Police found shell casings scattered from East State Street all the way to Hancock Street.

Neighbors were not able to identify any suspects, but reported seeing a newer model silver pickup speeding down the street with someone shooting out of it.

No arrests have been made.
