(CNN) – A new study suggests double mastectomies will not improve survival odds for patients battling cancer in one breast.

Double mastectomies are increasingly used to treat cancer in a single breast, but it doesn't always result in fewer deaths.

A study of almost 200,000 women showed nearly identical ten-year survival rates for women who chose removal of the tumor and radiation instead.

The research was published in The Journal of all the American Medical Associations.
